Embracing Spontaneity

“You can devise all the plans in the world, but if you don’t welcome spontaneity, you will just disappoint yourself.” – Abigail Biddinger

I have been a bit distant from the blog this weekend because I was too busy living spontaneously! Ryan’s brother and wife were here for over a week leading worship at our camp. We had plans to stick around our house over the weekend, but when Ryan found out he had Monday and Tuesday off, we spontaneously took a trip to Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona!

It all started with a desire to get out of the house. Ya know when it seems all you do is wash dishes, clean up, give baths, go to bed, and do it all over again the next day? I felt a little trapped. It was awesome having family here but, since we live so far from town, I often find this urge to just go.

So that’s what we did! We talked about some ideas, booked a hotel, packed up, and off we went! It was a really fun, spontaneous adventure! The “plans” we had made ended up changing a few times but it just made the trip even better. We all had a great time!

Sometimes, I feel like I can’t be spontaneous with kids. Too many times, I say “no” to something because I feel like I will mess up our schedule or the girls won’t get to take their naps. What I have come to realize is that kids are pretty resilient. Yes, Myra and Vivian missed a few naps, but they did so great! We had some cranky moments, but we had no problems at all! I am so glad that we took this trip! It was exactly what I needed!

Here are a bunch of pictures from our day at the Grand Canyon. If you have never gone to this incredible place, you really ought to go! It is worth the trip! I can’t even explain how amazing it is to see the Grand Canyon. Even though we have already been, it still blows me away. I hope you enjoy these pictures!

We even had a cool showing of wildlife! This elk was seriously this close to me! All she wanted was a drink and didn’t seem to mind all the people standing all around her!

Myra was a tad overwhelmed when it started to rain!

Have you heard of Walk in Love?

I can’t remember where I heard about this company (probably Instagram), but I have always loved the style and look of their shirts! Finally, when they started this sale to celebrate 10 years in business, I quickly bought a shirt for each of us! I am so excited that I finally got to support this awesome company that is located right near where I grew up! You should check out the website! They have sweatshirts, tank tops, and, of course, t-shirts! Plus, they are the softest shirts ever!

And to support the company a little more, we rocked our new shirts at the Grand Canyon! Aren’t the colors so fun and vibrant? And the little shirts are the cutest! We love our new, matching family tees! Thanks Walk in Love for the great reminder and the opportunity to be a light with the clothes we wear!

This is my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Ali.

It was so awesome getting to know them more and just hanging out during this trip! They are such fun people to be with and very talented musicians and videographers. Here are some gorgeous pictures my brother-in-law, Mike, took! They literally take my breath away! Check out their website here!

I still can’t believe we went to the Grand Canyon the other day! It always feels so surreal to be there and see such an incredible sight! The whole trip was full of beautiful views, great food, and lots of fun as a family!

Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? What was your initial reaction?

P.S. 8 Ways to Help Your Kids Love the Outdoors and Embracing Simplicity

  1. It was spontaneity for beginners – a simple menu of adventures, and all I had to do was order. I promised myself I would do something new from Groupon, every week for a year.

  2. What a fun time you must have had! I love spontaneity! There is nothing like dropping everything and just going somewhere, anywhere, on the spur of the moment. We love taking mini-trips, taking backroads in our area and exploring all that you would never know existed without being adventurous and spontaneous. We loved our trip to Grand Canyon. What blew my mind is that you don’t see anything (AZ side) but the buildings and parking lot until you walk a short distance and, VOILA!!!, there is the amazing, expansive view of the most beautiful sight. I will never forget that moment. However, my favorite spot was Sedona! The gorgeous colors of the rock formations that changed depending on the time of day and the position of the sun. We spent two days and a night there just to drink it all in. Our God has given us such incredible beauty to behold and enjoy. Thank you for sharing your adventure and your photos. Love you, Gram

    1. It was the same for me too! I remember the first time going to the Canyon, I was expecting to see it right away. But, like you said, it wasn’t until we walked a ways did we actually see it. It definitely blows my mind every time! We also went to Sedona for the first time too! It was GORGEOUS! We only got to spend an afternoon there but it was a really nice time! Hopefully we will get to go back sometime soon! 🙂
